Steve Ellis – Managing Director
Steve has over 25 years' experience in the construction industry. He has a BTEC National Diploma in Electrical and Mechanical engineering, a BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering Commercial Management and is a Chartered Builder.
Steve started his career in Civil Engineering, building bridges, sheet piling, marine revetment works and network rail contracts before moving into construction with a locally based company for 17 years, as Commercial Director. He has a very good technical knowledge along with excellent commercial skills which makes a big difference when value engineering a project.
Steve has strong experience of working in all sectors of the construction industry including commercial, residential, health, education, food, retail and transport. He also has a strong focus on customer relationships, satisfaction and believes supply chain partnering is the route to a quality end product.
His main focus and vision is to continue to build Probus Construction into a forward thinking Construction business where the team can have fun, be listened to and put the customer first.
Mark Preston - Estimator
Mark has over 25 year’s experience as an estimator in the construction industry and has an ONC and HNC in Civil engineering. His career started in civil engineering pricing jobs involving estate roads infrastructure, drainage, sewage/water treatment works, bridges, traffic calming schemes and tunnelling. He then switched to the building industry, pricing large retail units and offices before moving on to pricing large housing developments. As well as new builds, he has the ability and experience to tackle complicated refurbishment jobs. Mark also has experience in pricing small and general works jobs and building and civil engineering jobs from £100 to 15 million.
Mark has built up a good relationship over the years with the local subcontractors and supply chain within the area. He has worked in all sectors of the construction industry and in particular working on RAF jobs and maintenance contracts around the country.
Mark has recently been involved in a more active role and progressed to surveying his own jobs which he has priced and has very good customer relationship skills and is highly motivated to achieving high customer satisfaction and ensuring the that the projects are delivered on time.
Chris Hill BSc (Hons) Construction Management - Contracts Manager
Chris joined Probus following a period with a National Contractor, where he experienced a range of construction sectors and projects; up to values in excess of £10m.
Chris holds a BSc (Hons) Construction Management degree from Nottingham Trent University following completion of his HNC & HND accreditation. He completed his degree while working on various schemes including a new build leisure centre and refurbishment of listed buildings.
Since completing his degree Chris has worked on educational, large scale housing, industrial and commercial sector projects.
Chris develops good relationships with both the supply chain and our clients. His method of working is client focused and efficient which matches in with Probus’ business aspirations.
Chris Winstanley BSc Quantity Surveying - Surveyor/Contracts Manager
Chris is a Quantity Surveyor with a Bachelor of Science with Honours Degree in Quantity Surveying and Construction Commercial Management. Chris commenced his career as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor at Lindum working with Steve Ellis on a day release basis originally but later self-financed to study full time at University and to gain his degree earlier.
Chris had a long spell with a construction consultancy in London and following this he worked in Melbourne and Sydney for main contractors and was lucky to work on the Crown Plaza Casino,Sydney.
Returning to England early in 2020 Chris he re-joined Steve, this time at Probus. Chris has good experience in working with high pressure projects in sectors which range through Commercial, Residential, Mixed-Use, Retail and Education. His work ethos is very much aligned with the Probus mentality of prioritising customer satisfaction and high-quality workmanship.
Mike Sisson - Site Manager
Mike is a highly experienced Site Manager with more than 20 years of site management with major contractors. Immediately before joining Probus he worked for 14 years with Chalcroft Construction, until their demise, as No.1 Site Manager and most latterly as Compliance Manager incorporating Site Management duties.
The most recent projects Mike has managed include:-

£1.2m New high care production area for Princes Ltd,
£600k 1,100 sq m freezer extension for 3663,
£4.5m New Build factory, warehouse and offices for G R Wright & Sons Limited.
Mike is currently completing Probus Construction’s £1.0m project for Opals Group in Peterborough where we have carried out major alterations and fitting out of their live commercial unit and forming a new training centre. Mike has kept his Health & Safety training current with regard to SMSTS, IOSH, Black CSCS, First Aid at Work (British Red Cross), Temporary Works Co-Ordinator, Asbestos Awareness, Safe Management of Scaffolding Operations, Train the Trainer Fast Track.
Mike Thurman - Site Manager
Mike is a Manager with many years experience within the Retail construction industry, ranging from refits, alterations to new builds.
Mike has spent the last few years expanding his knowledge through the commercial, education, healthcare and residential sectors including works such as refurbishment of a tower office block, refurbishment of a research Centre, new build building for a school, security works to a multi storey car park and installing new ventilation system to a hospital to name a few.
Mike is SMSTS qualified along with scaffold safety, first aid, Asbestos awareness and equality at work. He is a big believer in communication and is happy to lead site and progress meetings with the ability to communicate to all levels. He has a keen eye for standards and passion to understand what the client requires and helping the client achieve their goal.
Tom Luto - Quantity Surveyor/Estimator
Tom is a two time graduate, with a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management and Economics and a Masters in Construction Project Management. Following graduation of his Bachelors degree, Tom started his career in the construction industry as a Quantity Surveyor with a consultancy in Birmingham and has explored and gained experience with a number of national companies since, in different roles and sectors.
Tom has worked on educational projects, large scale housing developments, food and beverage manufacturing plants, student accommodation and retail interiors projects ranging up to £2million.
He combines his Quantity Surveying and Estimating skills to ensure estimates are as accurate and inclusive as possible, and carries that pre-contract knowledge through to post contract stage.
Marc Nicholls - General Site Operative
Marc is a highly experienced Site Operative with over 20 years in the construction business. He started his working career with Witham Valley as a general operative however the majority of his previous experience lies in groundworks and joinery.
Marc is CSCS and SSSTS qualified as well holding his NPORS accreditation among others.
Marc is always happy to help and his multi skilled background can assist in the majority of jobs. He is a pleasure to have as part of the team.
Amanda Catt – Finance and Office Manager
Amanda has over 25 year's experience working in both the Finance and Administration Sectors. She has a wealth of experience working in fast paced, high pressured environments and enjoys being involved in all aspects of the company.
Amanda understands that being the face of the company and first point of contact is a very important role, so if you call/email/drop in to Probus Construction, you will always be greeted in a very polite and friendly manner. She is always willing to go that one step further for any of our customers, so if you require anything, please don't hesitate to ask as Amanda will be more than willing to help in any way she can.
Geoff Sear ACIOB - Business Development
Geoff works for Probus on a formal part-time basis generating new work opportunities and expanding on our existing relationships. Geoff has spent more than 30 years in the industry, firstly as a time-served Estimator Surveyor with a large main contractor in London and the last 20 years working in Business Development / Bid Writing capacities for two national builders.
Geoff firmly believes his commercial understanding of the construction industry has been a tremendous help when talking with clients and consultants about the individual challenges of their projects. Equally, they appreciate that Geoff will always ensure their requirements are understood, relayed and acted upon.
